About Draper Inc
Draper was founded in 1902 by Luther O. Draper as a window shade business in Spiceland, Indiana, and the company has been on the same site since 1922. It is fifth-generation family owned, describes itself as debt-free, and states plainly that it is not for sale — a rare thing to see written down in this industry.
Draper is not a luminaire manufacturer, and it is worth being clear about that. What it makes is window shades and solar control — motorised, manual and specialty — along with projection screens, AV structures and mounts, projector lifts, and gymnasium and athletic equipment. It introduced FlexShade systems in 1989 and TecVision projection screen surfaces in 2014, and entered the gym equipment market through acquisitions in the 1990s.
Shading belongs on a lighting quote more often than people expect. In South Florida the daylight is the strongest source in the room for most of the day, and a dimming or tunable-white specification that ignores the glare coming through a west-facing glass wall will not deliver what the drawings promised.
