About ETC
ETC — Electronic Theatre Controls — was founded in Madison, Wisconsin in 1975 and is still headquartered there. The company builds lighting control consoles, dimming and power control, entertainment and architectural fixtures, automated fixtures, rigging hoists and the networking that ties all of it together, so one manufacturer can cover both the control system and the fixtures it drives.
The markets ETC serves are theatre, film and television studios, and architectural spaces. In South Florida that means the same name turns up on a performing arts center, a house of worship, a hotel ballroom and a corporate lobby. The Eos console family, including Eos Apex, sits at the entertainment end; ArcSystem LED luminaires and ETC’s architectural and commercial lighting systems sit at the building end. Echoflex Solutions and Penko are part of the ETC group.
The fixture most people recognise is Source Four, ETC’s ellipsoidal spotlight. On the controls side, the F-Drive RX driver platform moves the control intelligence into the driver itself, so an architectural fixture takes the signal directly and holds a smooth dimming curve at the bottom of the range — the part of a dimming spec that usually causes the arguments on site. Not outside South Florida. SESCO holds this line for Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe counties, and I am the rep here. For a job elsewhere I will point you to the agency that holds it in that territory.

What is ETC best known for?
Lighting control. The Eos console family and ETC’s dimming and power control equipment are the backbone of a large share of theatres and television studios, and the Source Four ellipsoidal is the fixture most lighting designers picture when they hear the name. The architectural side of the company applies the same control engineering to buildings.
Does ETC make architectural lighting or only theatrical?
Both. Alongside the entertainment fixtures and consoles, ETC builds architectural fixtures such as ArcSystem, architectural control and commercial lighting systems, and LED drivers. On a mixed-use building it is common to see ETC control in the auditorium and ETC or Echoflex control in the back of house and office areas.
