Dining Room Lighting Built Around One Fixture

A dining room asks for one decision made well: the fixture over the table. Everything else in the room supports it. When the chandelier or pendant is sized to the table, hung at the right height and put on a real dimmer, the room works with almost nothing else. When it is too small, too high or on a toggle switch, no amount of perimeter light fixes it.

I price dining rooms for designers and builders across South Florida, and the same rules apply to a private dining room in a restaurant or a hotel. The lines below are all SESCO lines; most of the work is finding the match on my card for a fixture that was specified from a line I do not represent.

Sizing the fixture to the table

The old rule of adding the room dimensions in feet and reading the result in inches gives a chandelier diameter that suits the room, not the table. Size to the table instead: one half to two thirds of the table width for a round or square fixture, and for a linear fixture over a rectangular table, one half to two thirds of the table length with at least six inches of table showing past each end. A 42 inch wide table wants a 21 to 28 inch fixture; a 96 inch table wants a linear of about 48 to 60 inches.

Hang the bottom of the fixture 30 to 36 inches above the table top for an eight foot ceiling, and add about three inches for every foot of ceiling height above that. In a room with a 10 foot ceiling that is 36 to 42 inches. The test is a seated guest looking across the table at the person opposite: the fixture should sit above the sightline, not in it.

Perimeter light and the wall

A dining fixture that carries the whole room ends up too bright over the table and too dim at the walls. Two or four recessed adjustables aimed at the art or the sideboard, or a pair of sconces flanking a buffet, let the chandelier come down to a comfortable level while the room still reads as lit. Keep those perimeter fixtures on their own dimmer so the two layers can be balanced for a dinner and for cleaning up afterwards.

On a job with a plaster or wood ceiling, a trimless recessed adjustable disappears where a trimmed one would not. Lightheaded Opus and Liton both have trimless adjustable options; DMF covers the remodel case.

Dimming, color and the fixture schedule

Dimming is not optional in a dining room, and the fixture has to be specified for it. A decorative fixture with an integrated LED module needs a driver that matches the dimmer; a fixture with lamp sockets needs dimmable lamps that the fixture is listed with. I check every dining fixture on a schedule for the dimming method before pricing, because the call after installation is always about flicker or a dead low end.

Warm color belongs here: 2700K, or dim-to-warm on the fixtures that offer it, so the room warms as it dims the way an incandescent did. Where the fixture is glass, ask for the CRI; a low-CRI module in clear glass shows.
