Healthcare and Patient Room Lighting for South Florida

Healthcare lighting is specified against two documents that do different jobs. The FGI Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals, currently the 2022 edition, govern what a space must provide. ANSI/IES RP-29, Lighting Hospital and Healthcare Facilities, is the technical reference designers work to for the criteria themselves.

Worth knowing this autumn: FGI has said the 2026 documents are due for release in the autumn of 2026, and are being restructured and renamed from Guidelines to FGI Codes, with separate Handbooks for planning and design. If your project straddles the changeover, confirm with the reviewing authority which edition applies.

What separates a healthcare fitting from an ordinary one

• A patient room is not one lighting task, it is four. General ambient light for the room, a reading or task light at the bed under the patient control, a higher-level exam light for clinical use, and a low-level night light that lets staff work without waking the patient. Each has different criteria. Confirm the specific levels against RP-29 rather than against a vendor blog, because the published tables have been corrected by errata in the past and inaccurate numbers circulate widely.
• Cleanability is a specification, not a preference. In patient care and procedure areas, sealed optics, gasketed enclosures and smooth surfaces that tolerate repeated disinfection are what distinguish a healthcare fitting. A decorative fitting with an open reflector in a patient room is an infection control conversation you do not want.
• Glare is judged from the pillow. Most healthcare spaces are viewed by people lying down looking up. A fitting that measures well at desk height can be intolerable from a bed, which is why indirect and asymmetric distributions are common in patient rooms.
• Controls have to be usable by two different populations. The patient needs simple, reachable control of their own light. Staff need clinical levels on demand and night-time levels that do not disturb. That is a controls decision as much as a fixture decision.
• NFPA 99 governs the electrical system context, including which circuits are essential. Lighting that must remain on during an outage has to sit on the right branch, and that is coordinated with the electrical engineer.
• Behavioural health areas have their own hardware. Ligature-resistant fittings, tamper-resistant fixings and impact ratings are a distinct product category, not an option on a standard fitting.
