LED Tape and Cove Lighting: Tape, Channel, Drivers and Controls

It hides in coves, under cabinets, inside toe kicks, behind mirrors and along stair nosings, producing light with no visible fixture. What you are buying is a system rather than a product: tape, an aluminum channel, a lens, a driver, and a dimmer that agrees with that driver. Hold the Spec specifies every piece of it — tape, extrusion, driver and control — as one assembly rather than four line items.

Most tape complaints trace back to three things. A run fed from one end fades at the far end, a driver and dimmer were never tested together, or bare tape was stuck to a wood cove with no path for heat. Sizing the run: voltage, feeds and drivers

Tape comes in low-voltage constant-voltage formats, most often 12V or 24V. A 24V tape carries current further before voltage drop shows up as dimming and color shift at the far end, so it is the safer default on anything long. Every manufacturer publishes a maximum run length per power feed, and that number is worth following, because it depends on the tape's wattage per foot and its copper weight.

When a run exceeds that maximum, feed it from both ends or inject power at an intermediate point rather than stretching a single feed. Size the driver above the connected load so it is not working at its ceiling, and put it where a person can reach it without cutting drywall, since the driver is the component most likely to need replacing. Keep the low-voltage leads between driver and tape as short as the layout allows.

Channel, lens and cove detailing

Aluminum channel is not decoration. It pulls heat out of the tape, and heat is what shortens LED life and shifts color over time. It also gives you a clean edge and a slot for a diffusing lens that turns a line of visible diodes into an even glow. High-density tape with tightly spaced emitters makes a dot-free result possible at close viewing distance, but the lens and the depth of the channel do most of that work.

In a cove, the distance from the tape to the face of the cove and to the ceiling decides whether you get a soft wash or a hard scalloped stripe. Give the light room to spread, because a shallow cove with the tape close to the ceiling shows every diode as a separate arc. Paint the inside of the cove flat white so it reflects rather than tints.

Damp, wet and outdoor runs

Location rating is the claim inspectors and insurers care about. Indoor dry runs in a cove or under a cabinet can use unsleeved tape. Splash zones such as a bathroom perimeter or a covered soffit want an IP65 silicone-sleeved product, and anything that may sit in standing water needs IP67 or higher. The rating has to cover the whole chain, so drivers, connectors and splices each need protection suited to where they sit.

Dimming, color and consistency

Match the dimmer to the driver using the manufacturer's compatibility list, not by protocol name alone. Constant-voltage drivers are commonly dimmed by ELV reverse phase, TRIAC forward phase, or a 0-10V control pair, and a driver that handles one may flicker on another. Where finishes, artwork or food are on display, choose tape rated 90 CRI or better, and order all the tape for one space together so the white point stays consistent.
