Living Room Lighting in Layers, Not a Grid

The living room is where the recessed grid does the most damage. Eight downlights on 4 foot centers light the floor evenly and leave the walls, the art and the people in the dark. What makes a living room feel finished at night is light at three heights: something low at eye level, something on the walls and the things hung on them, and a soft wash on the ceiling so it does not read as a black lid.

I lay these rooms out with designers and builders in South Florida, in single homes and in the great rooms that repeat through a condo tower. Everything below is a SESCO line, and any of it can be priced as an alternate to a fixture specified from a line I do not carry.

The ceiling: fill and wash

Recessed fixtures belong at the perimeter and over the places people sit, not in a centered grid. Small-aperture adjustables aimed at the walls do more for the room than fixed downlights aimed at the floor, because a lit wall makes a room feel bright at a lower overall level. Keep the general fill on its own dimmer and expect it to run at 30 or 40 percent most evenings.

Where there is a tray, a soffit or a dropped ceiling, cove light is the quietest way to lift the ceiling. LED tape in a channel, mounted so the source is hidden and the throw is up and out, gives an even glow with no scallops if the channel sits at least a few inches below the ceiling plane. Kelvix, KKDC and Diode LED tape with matching channels are what I price for coves; PureEdge plaster-in channels are the answer when the designer wants a crisp line of light in a flat ceiling with no cove at all.

The walls: art and architecture

Art wants an accent ratio of about three to one over the surrounding wall to read as lit. A recessed adjustable with the right beam spread, aimed at 30 degrees from vertical, does that without glare; a ConTech monopoint with a Gallery M head does it where the ceiling cannot be cut, and it is the right answer for a real collection because the head can be re-aimed when the art changes. Wall washers at the perimeter turn a plain wall into the brightest surface in the room and make the whole space feel larger.

Sconces at eye level are the layer most often left off a residential plan. A pair flanking a fireplace or a media wall does the work of several downlights and gives the room its evening setting.

Eye level: lamps and portables

Table and floor lamps are lighting, and they should be on the plan. A switched receptacle or a plug-in dimmer on the same control system as the ceiling lets the lamps come up with the scene instead of being switched one by one. Tala, Mullan, Lumen Center Italia and Maiizen all have lamps that hold up next to an architectural package; Lambert and Fils and Panzeri cover the modern end.

Scenes and the control plan

A living room with four layers needs four dimmers or one scene controller, and the scene controller wins every time once the owner has lived with it. The fixtures have to be chosen for the control: 0-10V tape drivers, phase-dimmed downlights and a smart lamp module do not want to share a dimmer. I check every fixture on the schedule against the control before pricing, and I can price the control package alongside the lighting.
