That spread matters, because a pendant gets judged twice: once hanging unlit and once switched on. Hanging Height, Spacing, and Scale

Over a kitchen island, the standard is to hang the bottom of the pendant thirty to thirty-six inches above the countertop. Over a dining table, thirty to thirty-four inches above the tabletop keeps light on the food and glare out of sightlines. Those figures assume an eight-foot ceiling; on taller ceilings, add roughly three inches of drop for every additional foot so the fixture still belongs to the room instead of floating near the deck.

For spacing, treat the island as a run: keep the outer pendants about six inches inside the counter ends, with roughly thirty inches between centers on a typical island. Three small pendants suit a long island, two larger ones suit a short one, and a single linear fixture is often the cleaner answer when the island also carries seating. As a scale check, the combined width of the group should stay well under half the island length.

What You Are Paying For as the Price Climbs

Glass is the first divide. Pressed and machine-blown glass is uniform and easy to replace; hand-blown and hand-cast glass carries seeds, ripples, and variation from piece to piece, which is the point but also means a replacement shade will never be an exact twin. Metal follows the same logic, from stamped and plated parts to solid brass, cast components, and hand-applied finishes that keep changing slowly after installation.

The second divide is hardware you never see. Better lines use heavier canopies, extra downrod sections or field-adjustable stems in the box, sockets properly rated for the lamp they ship with, and jacketed or cloth cord instead of thin zip cord. On a sloped ceiling, ask whether the canopy is rated for your pitch. These details decide whether an installer hangs six pendants in an afternoon or fights each one.

Light Source, Dimming, and Wet Locations

Pendants come either with a standard socket or with an integrated LED module. Socketed fixtures let you change color temperature and output later, which is worth something in a kitchen you plan to keep. Integrated LED buys thinner profiles and better optics but ties you to that driver, so confirm the dimming protocol before controls are purchased: forward-phase, reverse-phase, and zero-to-ten-volt are not interchangeable, and a mismatch shows up as flicker, buzz, or a dead zone at the bottom of the dial.

Location listing governs anything near water. A covered porch or breezeway needs a damp-rated fixture at minimum, and anything exposed to rain or spray needs a wet listing. Near a tub or shower, the fixture must be listed for that location and kept clear of the zone above the rim, so check the manufacturer sheet and your inspector's reading of it before ordering.
