Recessed Lighting and Downlights, Specified Properly

Recessed lighting is the least forgiving category I represent. A chandelier that turns out slightly wrong can be swapped in an afternoon; twenty downlights cut into a finished ceiling cannot. The decisions that matter happen before drywall, and most of them are unglamorous: housing type, insulation contact, aperture size, beam angle, driver, and dimmer. The market has also split. Traditional can housings with separate trims still make sense for remodels and for anyone who wants to change the trim later. Canless and modular LED downlights install faster, fit shallow ceilings, and often deliver better optics. Architectural downlights add tighter beam control, deeper regression, and trimless plaster options. All three are legitimate answers; they just belong in different ceilings. IC rating, airtight housings, and clearances

A housing marked IC is listed for direct contact with thermal insulation. One that is not carries real clearance requirements: recessed parts must sit at least half an inch from combustible material, and insulation must be kept three inches away from the enclosure, wiring compartment, and driver. In an insulated attic or a top-floor ceiling, that clearance is difficult to police after the fact, so specify IC-rated housings and save yourself the inspection argument. Airtight construction is a separate property that limits conditioned air leaking into the attic and is required by many energy codes.

Spacing and layout that does not look like a grid

The common starting point for general illumination is to space downlights about half the ceiling height apart, so a nine-foot ceiling suggests roughly four and a half feet on center. Treat that as a first pass, not a rule. Pull the row off the wall by roughly two to three feet so the lights wash the wall instead of skimming the baseboard, and align the layout to the room and the cabinetry rather than to the joists. Over a counter or island, place fixtures to land light on the work surface, not on the back of someone's head.

Aperture, trim, and glare control

Aperture size drives how much hardware you see. Larger apertures throw more light per fixture and cost less per point; smaller apertures disappear into the ceiling and suit rooms where the architecture should be the story. What matters more than diameter is regression and finish inside the cone. A deeply regressed source with a dark or matte interior cuts the bright spot you see when you look up, which is why architectural downlights read calmer than a shallow trim of the same lumen output. Adjustable and wall-wash trims handle art and vertical surfaces.

Color quality, dimming, and drivers

For living spaces, ask for 90 CRI or better and pay attention to the R9 value, which governs how reds and skin tones look. Keep color temperature consistent across a room and ideally across a floor; 2700K suits most residential interiors and 3000K reads slightly crisper in kitchens and baths. Some lines offer field-selectable color temperature, which is useful when a decision is still open at rough-in. Dimming has to be planned with the driver: residential LED downlights usually want a reverse-phase dimmer, while commercial fixtures commonly use 0-10V control wiring.
