Spring City has been pouring iron at the same Pennsylvania foundry since 1843 and holds more than 6,000 patterns. That is the whole proposition: when a historic district, a city streetscape or a Buy America job needs a pole that matches something already standing, this is the line that can actually cast it. Two of the patterns in the traffic base catalog are named Biscayne Boulevard and Miami.

Why this line is different
It is a foundry, not an assembler
Almost every decorative pole quoted in this market is an extrusion with a cast or spun base bolted to it, drawn from a catalog of a few dozen shapes. Spring City casts, at its own foundry, from a pattern library that has been accumulating since 1843 and now runs past 6,000 molds. Signify’s competitors cannot make a shape that is not already in their tooling. A foundry can.
That matters in exactly one situation, but it is a situation this territory produces constantly: a historic district where the new pole has to match the old pole. Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Delray, West Palm, Key West, and every downtown streetscape that went in on a grant and now needs six more fixtures for a block extension.
Spring City describes itself on its own homepage as the sole dedicated lighting and pole manufacturer foundry in the United States. That is their claim and their wording, not a measurement I can verify, but the underlying fact — that they run their own foundry and their own patterns in Spring City, Pennsylvania — is stated consistently across their material and is the reason to bring them into a job.

Biscayne Boulevard and Miami are catalog pattern names. I can confirm the patterns and the codes exist. I have not been able to confirm from any published source that they originate from those specific streetscapes, and I am not going to imply it. Spring City states its LED system achieves over 133 lumens per watt with a 10-year warranty. The published filters run to 90, 100 and 120 maximum watts, with color temperature ranges of 2200–6000K and 2200–4500K.
Worth noticing: Edgewater and Washington appear in both the luminaire list and the pole list. The patterns are designed as matched sets, so the head and the post read as one object rather than two catalog picks bolted together. Ask me for the pairing when you specify — it is easy to get right at design and expensive to fix after the poles are cast.
The coastal question
2200K, dark sky, and the turtle ordinance
Spring City publishes color temperature ranges starting at 2200K and a dedicated Dark Sky family. In most of the country that is a light-pollution conversation. On this coast it is a legal one.
A decorative historic pole that can also be configured toward the long-wavelength end is an unusual combination. The ordinary answer on a beachfront street is an ugly amber fixture that the historic board rejects, or a handsome fixture that the turtle review rejects. A foundry that will cast the right shape and offers 2200K at least puts both requirements on the same drawing.
Do not read 2200K as compliant on its own. Coastal sea turtle requirements are written about wavelength content, shielding and mounting, not about correlated color temperature, and they vary by municipality — several of the city ordinances in this territory are stricter than the county. A 2200K source is in the right direction and is not automatically approvable. Send me the jurisdiction with the schedule and I will get the spectral data for the exact configuration rather than reasoning from the CCT. The jobs this wins
Where a foundry beats a catalog
- Matching an existing streetscape. A block extension, a storm replacement, or six poles knocked down over four years by four different drivers. Nobody else can cast a match; they can only offer something close, and close is what the historic board rejects.
- Historic district new work. Coral Gables, Miami Beach, Delray Beach, Key West, and the designated districts inside larger cities, where the fixture has to pass a design review before it passes an electrical inspection.
- Buy America and federally funded streetscape. Spring City leads with BUY AMERICA compliance and DOTS standards. On FDOT-funded and federally funded work that is a qualifying condition rather than a preference, and it eliminates most of the imported decorative competition before price is even discussed.
- LED conversion of poles already standing. The conversion kits relamp an existing Spring City casting. Cheaper than replacement, and it keeps the streetscape intact, which is usually the political requirement driving the project.
- Municipal and campus standards. Where a city has adopted a pole as its standard and will keep buying it for twenty years, a foundry with a permanent pattern is a different proposition from a catalog item that can be discontinued.
The honest limit: on a private commercial site with no design review and no federal money, this is a premium product competing against extruded poles that will do the job. It earns its price where the shape itself is the requirement.
What I could not confirm
The gaps in the published material
- No load, EPA or AASHTO data published on the family pages. For a traffic base or any pole carrying a signal arm this is the number that governs, and it is not on the website. I get it from the factory per configuration.
- No breakaway data. Nothing published on breakaway behavior for the traffic base family. On a DOT job that is a question to settle before selection, not after.
- Per-model lumen packages are not on the family pages. The filters show maximum wattages but do not map them to individual catalog numbers.
- Pattern origins. Biscayne Boulevard and Miami are catalog names. I could not confirm from any published source that they came from those cities’ streetscapes.
- The sole-foundry claim. That is Spring City’s own homepage wording. Their history page does not repeat it, and I have not verified it independently.
I would rather print the gap than print a guess. Any of these I will get in writing from the factory for a live job.

Can Spring City match an existing historic pole?
That is the core of what the line is for. They cast at their own foundry from a pattern library of more than 6,000 molds accumulated since 1843, and they advertise custom capability. Send me a photograph of the existing pole with something in frame for scale, plus the base dimension if you can measure it, and I will have the factory compare it against the pattern library before anybody talks about price.
Is Spring City Buy America compliant?
Spring City leads with BUY AMERICA compliance and DOTS standards, and manufactures at its own foundry in Spring City, Pennsylvania. Buy America, BAA and BABA are different standards and the requirement depends on the funding source, so for a federally funded job send me the specification language and I will get written confirmation for the exact configuration.
What is a BiMetal pole and why would I want one?
It combines cast iron and aluminum in one pole — iron low down where the pole takes physical abuse, aluminum above. On the Washington 21 in the base is 21 in with a maximum shaft outer diameter of 7 1/2 in, in smooth, 12 flat flute, 16 sharp flute or 8 sharp flute. On a coastal street the reason to care is that a one-piece or bimetal casting removes joints, and joints are where salt gets in.
Does Spring City make a dark sky or turtle-compliant fixture?
There is a dedicated Dark Sky family, and the published color temperature ranges start at 2200K. That is the right direction for coastal work but it is not the same as compliance — sea turtle ordinances here are written about wavelength, shielding and mounting rather than CCT, and several city ordinances are stricter than the county. Tell me the jurisdiction and I will get spectral data for the exact configuration.
Can I convert existing Spring City poles to LED without replacing them?
Yes. There are conversion kits, including a Cast Frame LED conversion, that relamp the existing casting. On a historic street this is often the only move that gets approved, because the streetscape does not change.
