DMF Lighting Modular Recessed Downlights
One housing, one plug-in module, one trim, ordered and changed separately. That is the whole DMF argument, and it is why a 4 in. aperture on a Miami job can go from a 750 lumen downlight to a 1,500 lumen adjustable without touching the ceiling. The current sheets for the families I quote most, kept here so the links do not die when DMF reorganises its site. Every figure on this page comes off one of these documents or off dmflighting.com; where DMF does not publish something, I say so rather than fill it in. IES files sit on the product pages - tell me the module, package and beam and I will send one over.
The system
Housing, module, trim: three parts you can change independently
Most recessed downlights are one assembly. DMF splits the luminaire into a housing that goes in at rough-in, a module carrying the LED, heat sink and driver together, and a trim that clips to the module - three separate catalogue numbers. DMF calls it "our universal and truly modular solutions" and claims it lets you "make changes on the fly to fixture lumen packages, color temperature, optics, and trims without major repercussions to your budgets or schedules". The brochure puts a number on the coverage: "The DRD Series can support 98% of recessed lighting use cases."
What that buys on a real job is sequencing. Housings go in before drywall; modules and trims arrive later, so the lumen package, colour temperature and beam are still open at a mock-up rather than closed at buyout. If the designer looks at 3000K in a Brickell lobby and wants 2700K, that is a module change from below the ceiling - "as easy as changing a lightbulb", in DMF's words.
Two mechanical points. DMF describes "Patented Twist & Lock Technology" for the trim-to-module connection and "Patented reinforced bar hangers" that "prevent trim sag". And per the brochure, "DMF's driver, heat sink, and the LED chip are all integrated into the module" - no remote driver to find a home for above the ceiling.

The families
What I quote, and where each one lands
DMF publishes a wide index. These four cover most of what I price in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. The DRD names people remember are now module codes inside the M Series, not family names: the sheets still print DRD2M for the fixed 4 in. module, DRD4M for the adjustable and DRD5S for the surface module. The 2 in. X Series is now the X Series 3 in., "Formerly Designated as 2 in.", and the DCC cylinder is now the 4 in. Cylinder, "Formerly DCC/M Series".




Output and colour
The lumen packages as DMF prints them
Every number here is off the manufacturer's current sheets, at the revisions listed above. The Commercial sheet prints efficacy as a range per package because the beam changes the delivered figure; the residential and X Series sheets print one figure. Colour is 93 CRI at 2-step SDCM, 3-step where tunable white is selected. DMF publishes no R9 value.

CCT on the M and X Series modules: 2400K, 2700K, 3000K, 3500K, 4000K, plus Warm Dim 3000K to 1800K and Tunable White in 4000K to 1800K and 6500K to 2700K. The S Series is 90-plus CRI at 2700K, 3000K or 3500K only. M Series beams: 90 degrees plus general ambient, 15, 25, 40 and 60 degrees, 40 by 20 linear spread and soft focus; the X Series runs 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 50 by 30. The M Series module is 120/277V, 0.13 A at 120V, power factor above 0.9, THD below 20 percent, ambient minus 20 to 40 degrees C.
Housings
Shallow plenums, fire-rated ceilings and concrete
The housing catalogue is where DMF earns its place on a renovation. South Florida is full of 1960s and 1970s concrete construction with almost no plenum, post-tension slabs, and ceilings that form part of a rated assembly. DMF publishes a housing for each condition on the same 4-1/4 in. cutout, so the ceiling plan does not change when the condition does.

Cutouts: 4-1/4 in. (108 mm) new construction and standard remodel, 4-1/2 in. (114 mm) fire-rated remodel. The X Series housings use a 3-1/4 in. (82 mm) cutout.
The super shallow is what I reach for on a concrete-deck renovation. Its installation instructions say the "housing comes set at a 3" height, but can be adjusted down to 2.5 should plenum space require it". There is a restriction attached: DMF states "a 2.5" depth is not compatible with DALI controlled fixtures or Adjustable modules." If the job wants DALI-2 or a tilting module, it stays at 3 in. The product page describes the low-profile housing at 2.5 in., but the sheet prints no overall height, so I treat that as a product page figure.
On fire-rated ceilings, DMF's bulletin states the housing with OneFrame technology is "code compliant for a maximum two-hour fire rating when installed in the appropriate fire-rated assembly", citing UL 514A outlet boxes and UL listing QCIT.E469361 and requiring that "the annular space between the ceiling membrane and the box does not exceed 1/8 inch (3.2 mm)" - so no boxed-out cavities or tenting above each can. Read it before arguing with an inspector. The residential sheet also lists ASTM E283 air tight, STC and IIC sound rated, and IC rated.

Trims
The part the client actually sees
Trim is a separate order line, so a finish decision can be made after the housings are in the ceiling, and a damaged trim is a trim rather than a fixture. On the M Series the shapes are M4TRS standard, M4TRH hyperbolic, M4TRP pinhole and M4TRL wall wash and sloped ceiling, in flanged, flangeless and dead-front styles, plus decorative and coastal marine-grade IP66 options. Finishes: white, black, bronze, clear diffuse, custom RAL. The Commercial sheet adds a vandal-proof and a coastal marine-grade trim, both at IK10 and IP66.

Dimming and controls
Four protocols, and which module carries which
This is the detail that most often needs correcting on a schedule I am handed. The dimming protocol belongs to the module, not the housing, and the modules do not all offer the same set. The residential M Series module publishes "0-10V (1%), DALI-2 (0.1%), TRIAC/ELV (1%), Lutron Athena Wireless Node (1%)". The Commercial module publishes 0-10V, DALI-2 and Athena only - no TRIAC or ELV on that sheet - and the S Series bottoms out at 5 percent on TRIAC/ELV.

Emergency on the M Series is a 90-minute battery at 5 W output, integrated or remote test switch. DMF publishes DALI-2 compliance and FCC Part 15 Class B on the current sheets.
Where this touches the Florida code: the FBC Energy Conservation 8th Edition asks for occupancy sensors, daylight-responsive controls and time switches on the interior side under C405.2, and R404.1 requires permanently installed residential luminaires to be high efficacy - every DMF package above clears that threshold comfortably. The control layer is not in the downlight, so on a commercial job I pair these with Wattstopper sensors and room controllers or the DALI-2 or Athena path, and I check the Florida energy code requirements against the drawn zones before anyone orders. Built for this climate
Wet, salt and sea turtles
Three things separate a downlight that lasts in South Florida from one that does not. DMF is unusually specific about all three, and about where the limits are, which matters more.
Wet versus damp, read carefully
The M Series fixed module is "UL Listed for Wet Location/IP66". The adjustable module is "UL Listed for Damp Location (Covered areas only)" - not wet-listed, which catches people who assume the family shares one rating. The Commercial module is "UL Listed for Wet Location (Under covered ceilings only)"; the 4 in. cylinder pendant is damp only; X Series and S Series modules are wet-listed. On a shower or an open lanai I confirm the exact module code against its own sheet.
Coastal and marine-grade finish
DMF publishes a coastal marine-grade trim on the M Series at IP66, a vandal-proof IK10 and IP66 trim on the commercial line, and a wet-listed coastal cylinder at IP65 in "Marine Grade White" and "Marine Grade Black" with a "Marine Grade Powder Coat Finish to withstand harsh coastal environments". What DMF does not publish is a salt-spray or ASTM B117 figure, so I will not quote one.
Turtle-friendly amber
The turtle-friendly module is 300 lm at 7.7 W, 39 lm/W, using a "Cree Amber LED (no color filter)" at "> 560 nm". The sheet says "Compliant with FWC Sea Turtle Lighting Guidelines" and "Dark Sky Approved Sea Turtle Sensitive Luminaires". DMF is honest in its own bulletin: the fixtures "are not currently listed as FWC Certified but are designed within the required specifications", and "as of April 2025, the FWC Wildlife Lighting Certification Program is currently closed". If a municipality demands a certified product number, raise it early. See sea turtle lighting rules and turtle-friendly lighting.

Beyond the recessed can
Cylinders, surface mount and retrofit
The same modules travel into surface and pendant hardware, which keeps a lobby, a balcony and a corridor reading as one aperture. The 4 in. cylinder, published as "Formerly DCC/M Series", comes in pendant 4CP, surface 4CS and wall 4CW prefixes, 4, 8 and 12 in. bodies, cord or stem at 24 or 48 in. standard and custom to 156 in. on cord, at 750 lm and 9.5 W up to 3,000 lm and 34.0 W on the V090226 sheet. One discrepancy to know: the product page shows 2,500 lm at 37 W and 3,000 lm at 40 W, while the sheet shows 27.5 W and 34.0 W. I quote off the sheet and confirm with the factory before a submittal goes out.
For a relight, the M Series Retrofit adapts to existing 4, 5, 6 and 8 in. cans and to 4O and 4S junction boxes, with four IC-rated packages from 750 to 1,500 lm and eight non-IC packages to 3,500 lm, plus a separate 8 in. to 4 in. conversion kit. DMF also publishes a compatibility matrix for its legacy frames: OneFrame DRDHNJD and DRDHNJC and SquareFrame DRDHNJS take the DRD2, DRD2X and DRD4 engines, SurfaceFrame DRDHNJO takes DRD2, DRD2X and DRD5S, and the Classic Frames take DRD2, DRD2X and DRD3 at 14.7 W. Where I specify it, and how I quote it
The jobs, and the four things I check
High-end residential and multifamily in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, where 93 CRI and warm dim to 1800K is what the designer is really asking for. Hotel guest rooms and corridors, where flangeless and dead-front trims disappear and the module swap keeps the mock-up cheap - see hospitality lighting. Concrete-deck renovations with a 3 in. plenum, where the super shallow housing is the only way in. Fire-rated corridors, where the two-hour bulletin saves an argument. Bathrooms, showers and covered lanais, where the wet listing decides it. And beachfront properties under a nesting-season ordinance, where the amber module drops into the same aperture as everything else. Background is on the recessed lighting page.
A DMF order is three catalogue numbers, not one, so four things get checked before a quote goes out. That the housing suits the real ceiling condition and thickness, because IC versus non-IC, fire-rated versus not and 2.5 versus 3 in. are separate part numbers. That the module location listing matches where it is going, since the fixed module is wet-listed and the adjustable damp-listed for covered areas only. That the dimming protocol matches the control system the engineer drew, because TRIAC is not on the commercial module and DALI-2 is not available at 2.5 in. And that the trim is on the order at all, because a housing without a trim is not a fixture.

Questions
Questions I get about DMF Lighting
Can I change the lumen package after rough-in?
Yes, that is the design intent. Housing, module and trim are three part numbers, and DMF states that swapping a fixed module for an adjustable one "is as easy as changing a lightbulb". What you cannot change afterwards is the housing, so the ceiling condition, the IC rating and the fire rating still need to be right on day one.
Which DMF downlights are wet rated?
It depends on the module, not the family. The M Series fixed module is wet listed and IP66; the adjustable is damp listed, covered areas only; the Commercial module is wet listed under covered ceilings only; the 4 in. cylinder pendant is damp listed; X Series and S Series are wet listed.
How shallow can the housing go?
The M Series super shallow housing is set at 3 in. and DMF says it "can be adjusted down to 2.5 should plenum space require it". DMF also states the 2.5 in. depth is not compatible with DALI-controlled fixtures or adjustable modules, so if the job needs either, plan on 3 in.
Is the turtle-friendly version FWC certified?
No, and DMF says so itself: its bulletin states the fixtures "are not currently listed as FWC Certified but are designed within the required specifications", and that as of April 2025 the FWC certification programme is closed to submissions. The sheet does state compliance with the FWC sea turtle lighting guidelines, a Cree amber LED with no colour filter and a wavelength above 560 nm. If your ordinance requires a certified product number, tell me at design stage.
What is the warranty, and where is it made?
Every current DMF spec sheet prints "5 year limited warranty; 50,000 hours" at 70 percent lumen maintenance, validated, DMF says, with an LM-84 full-fixture lifetime protocol. The warranty document on the site is dated August 2014 and gives five years from date of shipment with the usual exclusions. On where it is made: DMF publishes a Carson, California headquarters, an in-house R and D lab and a Southern California warehouse, and says it makes everything it can in-house, but it does not publish a country of manufacture or final assembly, and there is no Made in USA, Buy American or BABA statement anywhere I have read. If a federally funded job needs BABA certification I will ask the factory in writing rather than guess.
