Hazardous Location Lighting: Class, Division, Zone and What the Label Has to Say
In a classified area the fixture is not chosen on looks, price or lead time. It is chosen on a listing, and the listing either matches the area classification drawing or it does not. This is the one category on a lighting package that cannot be value-engineered, because the substitute has to carry the same marking.
Have a classified area on the drawings, or a hazardous package you need priced?
The classification comes first, and it is not mine to make
An area classification is set by the engineer of record on an area classification drawing, under NFPA 70 (the National Electrical Code) Article 500 or, if the project uses the zone system, Articles 505 and 506. It states what flammable material may be present, how likely it is to be present, and how hot a surface is allowed to get. Everything else — fixture family, optic, mounting, finish — follows from that.
What I can do is read the drawing and put fixtures in front of you whose published listings match it. What I will not do is tell you the area is Division 2 when the drawing says Division 1. If the classification looks wrong to me I will say so and send you back to the engineer, because the marking on the fixture is what the inspector reads.
If there is no area classification drawing in the set, that is the first thing to chase. A hazardous package cannot be priced honestly without one, and a fixture chosen against the wrong classification is a fixture that comes off the wall.
Class, Division and Group, in the order they appear on the drawing
The Division system in Article 500 asks three questions, and the answers stack into the marking you will see on a fixture label.
Class — what the material is. Class I is flammable gases, flammable liquid-produced vapors and combustible liquid-produced vapors. Class II is combustible dust. Class III is ignitible fibers or flyings.
Division — how often it is there. Division 1 means the hazard is expected under normal operating conditions. Division 2 means it is expected only under abnormal conditions — a container failure, a ventilation failure, a leak. Division 1 gear is heavier, costlier and longer lead time, which is exactly why the classification on the drawing matters so much to a budget.
Group — which material, specifically. Class I is divided into Group A (acetylene), Group B (hydrogen), Group C (ethylene) and Group D (propane). Class II is divided into Group E (combustible metal dusts), Group F (carbonaceous dusts) and Group G (other combustible dusts such as flour, grain, wood or plastic).
A fixture marked Class I Division 2 Groups A, B, C and D is not interchangeable with one marked Class I Division 1. Group coverage matters too: a Group D fixture does not cover a Group B area.
The Zone system, when the project uses it
Articles 505 and 506 offer an alternative classification aligned with the international IEC scheme. For gas, Zone 0 is where the hazard is present continuously or for long periods, Zone 1 where it is likely in normal operation, and Zone 2 where it is not likely and would be short-lived. Combustible dust uses Zone 20, 21 and 22 on the same logic. Gas groups become IIA, IIB and IIC.
Some manufacturers publish both markings on one sheet. RIG-A-LITE’s EHRS LED, for instance, publishes Class I Division 2 Groups A through D and Class II Divisions 1 and 2 Groups E, F and G alongside Class I Zone 1 Group IIB, Class I Zone 2 Group IIC, Zone 21 and Zone 22. Where a sheet carries both, you can hand the same submittal to a Division-system reviewer and a Zone-system reviewer.
The temperature code, which is the part that gets missed
Alongside Class, Division and Group, a hazardous luminaire carries a T-code: the maximum surface temperature the fixture is permitted to reach, from T1 down to T6. The rule is that the marked surface temperature must stay below the ignition temperature of the material in the area. A fixture can be correct on Class, Division and Group and still be wrong on T-code, and that is a rejection at inspection.
Ambient temperature is part of this. A T-code is published against an ambient range; a fixture installed above its rated ambient no longer holds its marking. In a South Florida mechanical room or an unventilated process area that is a real constraint, not a theoretical one.
What the standards on the label actually are
These are the marks that show up on the fixtures I quote for this work, and what each one covers.

A listing is a statement about the fixture, not about your design. UL 844 on the label does not mean the layout complies, that the T-code suits the material, or that the classification on the drawing is right. It means the fixture has been evaluated to that standard.
Hazardous-rated and harsh-rated are not the same thing
This is the most common mix-up on a South Florida schedule, and it goes both ways — a hazardous fixture specified where a harsh one would do, which is money wasted, or a harsh fixture specified in a classified area, which is a failed inspection.
Hazardous-rated means the fixture is listed for an area where an explosive atmosphere may be present. It is a code requirement driven by the classification drawing.
Harsh-rated means the fixture is built to survive the environment — salt air, washdown, vibration, impact, chemicals, temperature. It is a durability requirement driven by the room, and no classification is involved.
A parking garage on the water is harsh, not hazardous. A wastewater headworks may be both. A food plant’s washdown line is harsh and NSF, and usually not classified. A fuel farm, a paint booth, a solvent store or an LNG facility is hazardous, and the drawing will say so.
On the RIG-A-LITE line the catalog is organized this way rather than by style: 53 hazardous-rated products and 22 harsh-rated products, and the first question I ask is which column your job is in.
The South Florida part
Two local conditions change what survives in a classified or harsh area here, and neither is in the NEC.
Salt air. Coastal and near-coastal installations attack the housing, the hardware and the gasketing long before they attack the LED. Copper-free aluminum, stainless hardware and a published salt-spray result are what to look for. As a benchmark, RIG-A-LITE publishes ASTM B117-11 salt spray testing at 1,000 hours on the EHRS LED, with a die-cast copper-free aluminum housing, high-temperature silicone gasketing and stainless hardware. Wind. If any part of the classified area is outdoors — a tank farm, a loading rack, a marine terminal — the fixture and its mounting fall under the High Velocity Hurricane Zone rules along with everything else on the site. What to send me for a hazardous package
Four things get you a real price rather than a budget number.
The area classification drawing. Class, Division or Zone, Group, and the boundaries. This is the document the whole package hangs on.
The material and its ignition temperature, if it is known, so the T-code can be checked rather than assumed.
Mounting conditions — ceiling height, surface or pendant or bracket, conduit entry, and whether the location is indoors, outdoors or in a washdown zone.
The ambient range, especially for unventilated process spaces and anything on a roof in August.
If you have a fixture schedule with another manufacturer’s hazardous catalog numbers on it, send that too. Matching a hazardous fixture is a listing-by-listing comparison, not a lumen-and-price comparison, and I would rather show you the markings side by side than tell you it crosses.
Questions I get
What is the difference between Class I Division 1 and Division 2?
Division 1 means the flammable atmosphere is expected during normal operation. Division 2 means it is expected only under abnormal conditions, such as a leak or a ventilation failure. Division 1 fixtures are built to contain an ignition and cost and lead accordingly, so the classification on the drawing has a large effect on the package price.
Does a UL 844 listing mean my design complies?
No. It means the fixture has been evaluated as a luminaire for hazardous locations. Whether your design complies depends on the area classification, the group, the temperature code, the ambient and the installation. The listing is one input.
Is a parking garage a hazardous location?
Usually not. A garage is normally a harsh environment rather than a classified one — impact, vibration, exhaust, and on this coast salt air. The classification drawing governs; if there is fuel dispensing or storage involved, that changes the answer.
Can I use a washdown fixture in a classified area?
Only if it also carries the hazardous listing your area requires. NSF certification and a washdown rating say the fixture survives cleaning; they say nothing about an explosive atmosphere. The two requirements are independent and a job can need both.
What does the T-code on the label mean?
It is the maximum surface temperature the fixture is permitted to reach, marked T1 through T6. It has to stay below the ignition temperature of the material present in the area, and it is published against an ambient range that the installation has to respect.
Does the Zone system mean something different from the Division system?
They are two ways of describing the same physical risk. Zone 0, 1 and 2 for gas and Zone 20, 21 and 22 for dust map onto Divisions with more granularity at the high-risk end. Some fixtures publish both markings, which makes the submittal easier whichever system the reviewer uses.
Who decides the classification?
The engineer of record, on the area classification drawing, under NEC Articles 500 or 505 and 506. Not the contractor, not the manufacturer, and not me.
