Louis Poulsen has been in Copenhagen since 1874 and calls itself the original house of light. It is part of the Flos B&B Italia Group, which also owns Flos and B&B Italia, and which is jointly owned by Investindustrial and Carlyle. Its registered office is on Kuglegårdsvej in Copenhagen.
The company’s design philosophy came out of its collaborations with Danish architects and designers, and the names on the fixtures are the point. Poul Henningsen designed the PH series, including the PH Artichoke of 1958. Verner Panton designed Panthella. Øivind Slaatto designed Patera. Arne Jacobsen is named among the designers associated with the house. These are not styled after mid-century design — they are mid-century design, still in production.
The shared principle behind them is shielded light: the shades are shaped so the lamp is never seen directly and the light reaches the room reflected. That is why a Louis Poulsen pendant can hang low over a dining table without glaring at the people sitting under it, and why the fixtures work in South Florida rooms with a lot of glass, where an unshielded source produces reflections in every window after dark. The range covers pendants, table, floor and wall lamps, outdoor lamps and indoor architectural product.

What is Louis Poulsen known for?
Danish design lighting with shielded optics — the PH Artichoke, Panthella, Patera and AJ series among them. The house has been in Copenhagen since 1874 and works from named designers rather than an in-house style.
Who designed the PH Artichoke?
Poul Henningsen, in 1958. The PH series is built on his principle of layered shades that hide the lamp and deliver light reflected rather than direct, which is why the fixtures can be hung low without glare.
Who owns Louis Poulsen?
It is part of the Flos B&B Italia Group of Milan, alongside Flos and B&B Italia. The group is jointly owned by the investment firms Investindustrial and Carlyle.
Does Louis Poulsen make outdoor lighting?
Yes — outdoor lamps are a published category alongside the decorative and indoor architectural ranges. Confirm the location rating and finish for a coastal South Florida installation when the quote is prepared.
