Teslyte: Handrail, Step, In-Ground and Site Lighting, and What the Sheets Actually Say

Teslyte is in Anaheim, California, and publishes itself as a solutions-based engineering and manufacturing company doing architectural LED for pedestrian scale, pathway, landscape, step, marker, in-ground, wall sconce and area and site, plus retrofits and networked controls. On my card it is the line I reach for when the detail is a handrail, a stair, a marker or a low-level path — the places where a standard catalog fixture does not fit and a modified one does.

Have a stair, a handrail run, a path or a garage deck that needs low-level light?

Read this before you specify

Teslyte publishes a wide catalog with hundreds of spec sheets, but the sheets are thin and uneven. Wattage, color temperature, finish and voltage are almost always there; lumens are often missing, CRI almost always is, and most sheets publish an IP rating or a wet-location note without naming a safety listing at all. This page is built on what is actually printed, and it flags what is not, because that is the part that stops a submittal.

Teslyte published company and policy data
CompanyTeslyte, 155 Liberty Ave, Unit G/H, Anaheim, California
In-house capabilityDesign, fabrication, fixture assembly and LED module engineering, with published 100 percent functional testing and in-house IP65 water testing
Made in USAPublished for one group only: Teslyte offers a collection of area and site luminaires that are made in the USA. No domestic-content statement covers the rest of the catalog, and there is no BAA or BABA statement
WarrantyThree or five years from invoice date depending on the product. LED components and drivers are three or five years from date of manufacture, or 25,000 hours of operation, whichever is less. Structural coverage on enclosure, globe, glass trims, seals, hardware, lenses, optics, diffusers and paint against cracking, peeling, excessive fading and corrosion
Warranty, the clause to read twiceCoverage is voided by ambient operation above 35 °C, and by the absence of overvoltage or lightning protection. On an unshaded South Florida site or a west-facing garage deck, 35 °C ambient is not a theoretical number. Settle it in writing before the order
Lead time48-hour turnaround published on design feasibility, drawings, specification and quotation; an 8-week custom design process; and a 4-week lead time on modified luminaires built from existing cataloged products. Standard cataloged lead time is not published
CancellationStandard non-custom orders can be cancelled with written notice 60 or more days before scheduled delivery. Custom product orders are non-cancellable

Ordering, finishes and controls

Teslyte does not use one catalog-number grammar. Each family defines its own string, and the published examples are worth having in front of you when a quote comes back.

Teslyte published ordering and controls data
Step lightsPrefix, wattage, CCT, finish, accessory — C12-12W-4-B-DMG is 12 W, 4000K, black, 0-10V dimming

What Teslyte does not publish

None of this rules the line out. It is the list of things I settle with the factory before a Teslyte fixture goes on a schedule.

Teslyte unpublished items
Safety listingsOnly one UL file number appears anywhere, on the handrail. SB-QL45 and TL-CYL6 say UL listed without a file number, SB-ER16 says ETL certified without a control number, and most sheets — including the bollards, columns, post tops, in-grounds and bullets — publish no listing mark at all, only an IP rating or a wet-location note. An IP rating is not a safety listing, and an AHJ will say so
CRIPublished on two sources only: SB-QL45 at 80, and the DLC retrofit tables at 77 and 84. Absent from every other sheet
LumensMissing from a large part of the bollard, column, wall sconce, bullet, tree light and solar range — wattage and dimensions only
PhotometryIES files are posted for a good number of SKUs, which is better than nothing, but coverage is uneven and many families point to the factory instead. No LM-79 or LM-80 report and no L70 rating is published
BAA and BABAA single made-in-USA sentence covering the area and site collection. No domestic-content percentage, no BABA statement, no country-of-origin declaration per catalog number
Pole structural dataNo EPA tables, wind speed ratings, gauge, base plate or bolt circle details are published for the TL-SP and TL-RP poles, and no EPA is published for the luminaire heads, so pole and luminaire wind loading cannot be checked from published data
Turtle-safe dataThe turtle-friendly and amber SKUs publish no wavelength and no FWC certification
AmbientPublished only for the handrail driver, at minus 40 °C to plus 85 °C. Everywhere else it is absent, while the warranty voids above 35 °C ambient
DLC IDsThe DLC list page publishes model strings and performance but no DLC product ID numbers and no link to the qualified products list
EmergencyNo emergency battery, UL 924 or generator-transfer option is published on any family. The one bollard published as an exit-sign bollard carries no UL 924 listing or egress data

Questions I get

Who represents Teslyte in South Florida?

I do, through SESCO Lighting, in Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe.

What is Teslyte actually good for?

Handrail and stair integration, step and marker lights, low-level path and landscape, in-grade, and modified versions of cataloged product. Teslyte publishes a 4-week lead time on a luminaire modified from an existing catalog item and an 8-week custom design process, which is what makes it useful when a standard fixture will not fit the detail.

Does Teslyte publish a UL listing?

Only in places. The handrail system publishes UL file E194432. SB-QL45 and TL-CYL6 say UL listed with no file number, and SB-ER16 says ETL certified with no control number. Most other sheets publish an IP rating or a wet-location note and no listing mark at all. If your AHJ needs the listing on the submittal, tell me the catalog number and I will get it in writing before it is specified.

Is Teslyte made in the USA?

Teslyte publishes that its area and site collection is made in the USA. No statement covers the rest of the catalog, and there is no Buy American Act or Build America, Buy America position published. On a federally funded job that has to be certified per catalog number first.

What is the ambient limit on a Teslyte fixture?

The published warranty is voided by ambient operation above 35 °C, and Teslyte publishes an ambient range for the handrail driver only. On an unshaded site here that is worth confirming in writing before the order, because 35 °C is a number South Florida hits.

Can Teslyte do turtle-friendly step lights?

Teslyte publishes a turtle-friendly version of the WR-ET2006 step light at 12 W, and an amber option on the handrail. It publishes no wavelength and no FWC certification for either, so on a permit that turns on a certified fixture I would put the finder in front of you first and get Teslyte’s position in writing second.

Where the numbers come from, and where to go next
