Kitchen Lighting Planned in Four Layers

The kitchen is the one room where task light, decorative light and the energy code all land on the same reflected ceiling plan. Here is how I lay one out and which lines I price it from.

Most kitchen lighting problems come from treating the ceiling as the whole answer. A grid of downlights lights the floor and the top of the head, and the cook works in their own shadow at the counter. The layouts that hold up are the ones that start at the work surface and build upward: light on the counters first, then the island, then the general fill, then whatever the designer wants people to look at.

Layer one: the counters

Under-cabinet light does more for a kitchen than any other single fixture, and it is the one most often cut for budget. LED tape in an aluminum channel with a diffuser is the right answer in most cases: it gives a continuous line with no hot spots on a glossy backsplash, it can be cut to the cabinet run in the field, and the driver goes somewhere serviceable. Mount the channel at the front of the cabinet, behind the light rail, so the light lands on the counter and not on the wall. Specify the tape by lumens per foot and CRI, not by watts; 300 to 400 lumens per foot at 90 CRI or better is the range that reads clean on stone.

Where the counter is a peninsula with no upper cabinets, a pair of small recessed adjustables aimed at the work surface takes over the job.

Layer two: the island

Island pendants are decorative, but they are also the task light for the most used surface in the house, so they need real lumens and a shade that does not put a bare source at eye level when someone is seated. Two or three pendants over a 7 to 10 foot island is the normal rhythm; a single linear fixture is the alternative when the island is narrow or the ceiling is low. Hang the bottom of the shade 30 to 36 inches above the counter and keep the outer pendants a foot or so in from the ends.

On the decorative side I start with Vonn for integrated LED linears and modern clusters, Besa for glass, Mullan for hand-finished brass and copper, and Lambert and Fils and Panzeri when the design is doing the talking. All of them can be matched to a fixture that was specified from a line I do not carry; that is most of what I do.

Layer three: the general fill

Recessed downlights should fill in between the task layers, not carry the room. Small apertures with a deep regressed source keep the ceiling quiet, and in a kitchen the lens or trim needs to clean easily. Spacing at roughly the ceiling height in feet divided by two, run along the counters rather than in a centered grid, puts the light where it is used. Wet-location trims go over a sink under a window or anywhere steam collects.

Lightheaded Opus is my first pick for a tight, trimless residential ceiling. DMF and Liton cover remodel and new-construction housings with high-CRI modules, and TGS is the value option when a builder has forty kitchens to light and every dollar per unit counts. For an accent on open shelving or a range wall, a ConTech monopoint with a Gallery M head does the job without a track run.

Dimming and the energy code

Every layer wants its own dimmer, and the tape and the pendants want to dim together only if they share a driver type. Mixing a 0-10V tape driver with phase-dimmed pendants on one control is the most common call I get after a kitchen is finished. I check the driver of every fixture on the schedule against the control before I price it.

Florida writes its own energy code, and for new residential construction it requires high-efficacy sources in nearly all permanently installed fixtures. Decorative pendants with screw-base sockets are the usual snag at plan review. Integrated LED pendants, or LED lamps that the fixture is listed with, close that gap; the local building department has the final say on what they accept, so I confirm before the schedule goes out.

Common questions

How many lumens does a kitchen need?

Plan the counters at 50 footcandles or better and the general fill at 20 to 30. In practice that is 300 to 400 lumens per foot of under-cabinet tape plus enough downlights to fill between the task layers. I run the numbers for you from the plan.

Can island pendants be the only light over the island?

Yes if they carry real output and the shade directs it down. An open, clear glass pendant with a decorative lamp looks right and lights nothing; pair it with a small recessed adjustable if the designer wants that look.

Do kitchen pendants have to be LED in Florida?

For new residential construction the Florida energy code expects high-efficacy sources in nearly every permanently installed fixture, and plan reviewers look at decorative pendants first. An integrated LED pendant, or a fixture listed with an LED lamp, is the safe answer. I confirm with the local department on anything unusual.

What goes over the sink?

A wet-location or lensed downlight if there is steam, or a small recessed adjustable if the sink is under a window. Avoid an open reflector trim there; it collects grease.
