WE-EF in South Florida: What 5CE Actually Protects, and What Is Not Published
WE-EF is a German exterior house founded in 1950, family owned, with US operations in Warrendale, Pennsylvania. It is on the SESCO South Florida card and it is the line I reach for when the enemy is salt air rather than budget. What follows is read off their own technical sheets, including the places where two WE-EF documents give different answers.

5CE — the corrosion story, and it is a real one
Most manufacturers say marine grade and stop. WE-EF publishes the numbers, and on this coast that is worth something. Five elements, all published in their own technical sheet.

Two honest caveats on that last line. Up to 3,000 hours describes what their laboratory does, not a rating a product carries. And no test standard is cited in any of the three WE-EF documents I read — no ASTM B117, no ISO 9227, no ISO 9223 corrosivity class. A number with no standard behind it cannot be compared against a competitor’s B117 hours, and I will not pretend otherwise.
The stainless grade is also not published. Austenitic covers both 304 and 316, and on an oceanfront parcel that is the entire question. I get it confirmed in writing per order rather than assuming.
5CE Plus Primer, and the thing their own site does not put together
There is an upgrade. Conversion coating, then an intercoat bonding epoxy primer at 80 to 100 microns semi-cured at 180 C, then the polyester topcoat fully cured at 200 C. WE-EF’s own sheet calls it particularly suitable for coastal and aggressive environments.
Here is what is worth knowing, and it takes reading two documents to see it.

This is the single most useful question a specifier can ask on a beachfront job, and it is not answerable from the US website. I ask it per order.
Dark sky, amber and turtles — read this before a beachfront parcel
WE-EF is genuinely strong on dark sky and genuinely unproven on turtles, and those are two different things that get conflated constantly here.

Straight answer: for a beachfront parcel inside a coastal lighting ordinance in Broward, Miami-Dade or Palm Beach, DarkSky Approved is not a substitute for FWC Wildlife Lighting certification and I will not sell it as one. For the rest of a coastal site — the campus, the plaza, the streetscape, the resort grounds set back from the beach — WE-EF is one of the best-protected things on my card.

| Spec sheets are locale generated and the numbers differ | The same product returns a metric 230 V DALI sheet at 6 kV surge for one locale and a US 120 to 277 V ETL sheet at 10 kV with a BUG rating for another. Lumens differ too. Always pull the en-US sheet. |
| Efficacy is not published | WE-EF publishes nominal lumens, delivered lumens at ambient, and input watts. It does not publish lumens per watt. Any efficacy figure is arithmetic, not a manufacturer claim. |
| ETL, not UL, and no DLC found | US sheets read ETL Listed, suitable for wet locations. No UL mark statement and no DLC listing appears anywhere. That matters for a Florida utility rebate. |
| Surge is not uniform | Six kilovolts on some metric sheets, ten on the US ones, ten kilovolts and ten kiloamps remote on others. The warranty excludes systems without approved surge protection. In this lightning belt, schedule it explicitly. |

Questions I get
Who represents WE-EF in South Florida?
WE-EF is on the SESCO Lighting South Florida line card and I am the rep here for Broward, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach and Monroe. Send me the site plan.
Is WE-EF turtle certified?
Not on any published evidence. WE-EF is DarkSky Approved on a long published model list and references amber as a capability, but there is no FWC Wildlife Lighting certification, no published wavelength and no part numbers for amber. For a beachfront parcel under a coastal ordinance I will put you on a line that is certified.
What is 5CE and is it worth specifying?
It is WE-EF’s five-part corrosion system: low-copper marine alloy with published composition limits, a conversion coating at published weights, architectural polyester at 60 to 100 microns to GSB and QUALICOAT, polymer-coated austenitic stainless hardware, and salt spray testing of up to 3,000 hours. It is better documented than almost anything else on my card. On a coastal job, yes.
What is the difference between 5CE and 5CE Plus Primer?
An intercoat epoxy primer at 80 to 100 microns between the conversion coating and the topcoat. It takes corrosion coverage from five years to ten. It appears to be standard in Australia and optional in the United States, which is a question I ask on every coastal order.
Is the hardware 316 stainless?
WE-EF publishes austenitic stainless, which covers both 304 and 316, and does not publish the grade. On an oceanfront parcel I get it confirmed in writing before it is specified.
Is WE-EF DLC listed?
I found no DLC listing published and none in the qualified products list. If a utility rebate is in the budget, plan around that.
How fast can I get it?
LIGHTSPEED covers more than 1,300 stocked items at ten day dispatch, in four standard finishes at 3000 or 4000 K, ordered by 11am Eastern. Anything custom, tunable, amber or with the coastal primer sits outside that and I will get you a real date.
