Specifying a linear system is a different exercise from picking a decorative fixture. You are choosing a run length, a mounting method, an optic, a driver and a control protocol, and all five have to agree with the ceiling and with the electrical drawings. Recessed, surface or suspended

Mounting drives most of the cost. Recessed linear needs plenum depth and, in drywall, a mud-in or trimless detail coordinated with the drywall contractor before the ceiling is framed. Surface-mount runs are the simplest retrofit and need only a flat plane and a feed. Suspended runs add uplight as well as downlight, which lifts a low ceiling and softens shadows on faces, but they need structure above and a careful cable layout so the run reads level.

Continuous runs are assembled from individual sections joined end to end. Ask for the run diagram before ordering: the joiner detail, whether the LED board continues across the seam or leaves a dark gap, and how the feed enters. Corners, tees and crosses are usually separate parts with their own lead times. Settling the run schedule at order time avoids the classic problem of a run that lands two inches short of the wall.

Optics, glare and layout

The lens does more for comfort than the lumen number does. A frosted or opal diffuser spreads light evenly and hides the diodes, but it is brighter to look at directly. Louvered and deep-cell optics cut the glare angle and are the usual answer over desks and screens, where a low unified glare rating is what the specification is asking for. For a wall of art or shelving, an asymmetric wall-wash optic aimed at the surface beats a symmetric downlight.

Dimming and controls

Commercial linear fixtures are usually specified with 0-10V dimming, which runs a separate low-voltage control pair to each driver. DALI adds addressing, so individual fixtures can be grouped and regrouped in software instead of by rewiring. Residential and light-commercial runs are more often phase-dimmed, using an ELV or forward-phase dimmer that the driver manufacturer has tested. Decide the protocol before rough-in, because the control wiring and the driver selection both follow from it.

Getting the submittal right

Architectural orders live or die on paperwork. I pull specification sheets, photometric files and shop drawings from the manufacturers we represent, check finish and voltage against the schedule, and flag anything that will not build the way it is drawn. Lead times on made-to-order runs vary by manufacturer and by season, so confirm them before committing to a ceiling closure date. Send the fixture schedule and I will work through it line by line.
