Commercial work is judged differently than residential. Nobody compliments an office ceiling; they notice it only when the glare is bad, the color is off, or the inspector red-tags the controls. The work usually falls into two halves. One half is the compliance layer: light levels, glare, energy code controls, and egress illumination, all of which have to be right before anything else matters. The other half is the parts people actually see, which in offices increasingly means decorative pendants over collaboration areas and reception, not just linear troffers. Light levels, glare, and how people actually work

Recommended practice for general office desk work sits in the range of roughly thirty to fifty footcandles measured at the work surface, and the practical target moves within that band depending on occupant age and the tasks involved. Raw quantity is the easy part. The harder problem is glare, because most office work now happens on a screen rather than on paper. Fixtures with high luminance in the viewing angles produce reflections and eye strain, so shielded, diffused, or well-baffled optics matter more than lumen count. Some vertical light on walls also keeps a space from feeling like a cave.

Energy code and the controls it requires

Commercial energy codes based on IECC and ASHRAE 90.1 cap the connected lighting power for a building and require automatic control, not just a wall switch. In most space types that means automatic shutoff, occupancy or vacancy sensing, and daylight-responsive control in areas near windows and skylights. Florida enforces its own version through the Florida Building Code, and other states adopt their own editions, so the specific requirements depend on the jurisdiction and code year. Plan the control layer with the fixture layer, since 0-10V or digital control wiring has to be pulled during rough-in.

Egress, emergency, and life safety

Means of egress has to stay illuminated when normal power fails, and life safety codes set a minimum average illumination along the path of egress, commonly one footcandle at floor level with a lower minimum at any single point. That is delivered either by fixtures with integral battery packs or by a central inverter feeding designated luminaires. Not every fixture accepts a battery pack, and decorative pendants frequently do not, so identify the emergency fixtures early and confirm the option exists on that model. Exit signage and testing requirements are separate and also enforced.

Submittals, lead time, and quoting support

A commercial order lives or dies on paperwork. I pull specification sheets, photometric files, installation instructions, and finish options for the fixtures I quote, and I can assemble those into a submittal package for the architect or engineer. Where a fixture is custom-finished, made to order, or built to a specific length, lead time is set by the factory and I will tell you what it is before you commit rather than after.
