Hospitality lighting is bought differently from residential lighting. Quantities are large, finishes have to match across an entire floor, fixtures have to survive housekeeping and guests who have no reason to be gentle, and every piece has to clear accessibility and listing requirements before it is approved for the job. Guestroom Layers and Guest-Proof Controls

A guestroom needs five things lit: the entry, the general volume, the bed for reading, a work surface, and the bath. Reading light is where most rooms fail. A bedside fixture with a tight beam or a shielded shade lets one guest read while the other sleeps, while an open shade over a nightstand does the opposite. Confirm on the spec sheet whether a bedside sconce includes a switch, a receptacle or USB, since that varies by manufacturer and even within one family.

Controls should be legible at two in the morning to someone who has never been in the room. A clearly marked master off at the bed is worth more than a scene system nobody learns. Keep every fixture in the room at one nominal color temperature, generally 2700K for a warm guestroom, and choose the dimming protocol before the dimmer so drivers and controls are matched rather than discovered on site.

Corridors, Public Space and Accessibility

Corridor sconces sit on a circulation path, so the ADA standards apply: a wall-mounted fixture whose leading edge falls between 27 and 80 inches above the floor may not project more than four inches from the wall. That one rule eliminates a large share of attractive residential sconces from hotel corridors. Space the remaining candidates for even scallops with no dark gap at guestroom doors, and keep egress and emergency lighting as its own code-driven system rather than leaning on the decorative layer.

Public spaces are sized to volume, not to floor plan. A fixture that reads correctly in a ten-foot room disappears in a two-story lobby, and a chandelier chosen from a catalog photograph often arrives smaller than the space needs. Check sightlines from stairs and mezzanines, because open-top fixtures that look clean from below show their lamps from above. Ask how the fixture will be reached for cleaning and relamping before it is approved.

Finish Matching, Ordering and Attic Stock

Finish names are not standardized. One manufacturer's bronze is another's oil-rubbed brown, and two fixtures approved from small chips can look wrong side by side on a wall. Request physical samples and approve them together under the light the project will actually use. Order a full run at once so pieces come from the same finishing batch, and buy attic stock in that order rather than a year later. Confirm voltage and location listing on imported lines before the purchase order goes out.
